Tuesday April 26, 2005 was the perfect day, with a gentle breeze blowing.  The perfect day to spend under a tree in the front yard with good friends.  Scierra (Sissy) and I spent a good part of the morning just enjoying the nice weather.  I was preparing to say goodbye to my friend, and she was getting ready for her journey to the Rainbow Bridge.  I feel she was looking forward to the journey ahead of her and I was dreading the broken heart that would follow.

Sissy came to live with me to help me heal a broken heart.  Six years earlier I lost my “Heartdog” Katie. Sissy came to fill that void.  I also had the job of healing her heart.  She had been let down by humans in the past so she needed to learn to love and to trust again.  In those six years we healed together.  The path we walked wasn’t always a smooth one, but it was paved with mutual respect and love.

Her job was done, and I now had a promise to keep.  When I adopted Sissy I made her a promise, that she would be able to let me know when the time was right for her to move on, and that if at all possible she would go with the dignity a Rottweiler deserves.  She told me it was time, and I kept my promise.

So on a perfect day, my girl, my good friend Scierra, a formerly unwanted Rottweiler passed gently over the Bridge to wait for me.  She passed gently in my arms.  I could do no more, and she deserved no less.

Rest in peace, Sissy.
